A stop valve, most commonly known as a globe valve, is a type of valve designed to start, stop, and regulate the flow of a fluid (liquid or gas) in a pipeline.
Spherical Body: The classic globe valve has a rounded body chamber that houses the seat and disc.
Internal Baffle: A stationary ring (the seat) is located in the center of the valve body. The flow must pass through this seat.
Linear Motion Stem: The handwheel is turned to move a stem up and down linearly. This is different from quarter-turn valves like ball or butterfly valves.
Disc and Seat Design: The plug-shaped disc (which can be flat, ball, or conical) mates perfectly with the seat to create a seal. The seat is usually replaceable.

Isolation (On/Off Service): This is its primary function. The valve can be fully closed to completely stop the flow of fluid in a pipeline, allowing for maintenance, repair, or isolation of a section of the system.
Throttling / Regulating Flow: Due to its design, a stop valve can be partially opened to precisely control and reduce the flow rate. The disc can be positioned at any point between fully open and fully closed to modulate the flow.
Positive Shut-off: When fully closed, a well-designed stop valve provides a tight seal, preventing any leakage. This is crucial for safety and system efficiency.
